No Problem! We are teaching students of all levels. our lessons are tailored to suit each person’s specific age, ability, and goals. In fact, students who are beginners often have no bad habits to overcome, so your progress can be relatively quick.
We generally recommend weekly lessons, as consistency is key when learning a new skill. Most students take one lesson per week, though for those who struggle with regular practice at home, we may suggest two lessons per week to help build stronger habits and a consistent routine.
We also offer à la carte lessons for adult students with busy schedules or professional musicians preparing for special events such as auditions and competitions. These flexible sessions can be scheduled as needed to focus on specific pieces or goals. Please contact us for more information and rates.

For musical growth, consistent practice is much more important than long hours! We suggest 15 minutes a day, five times a week, for young beginners (ages 5-7). As children get older and manage more activities, 8-10-year-olds will benefit from around 30 minutes daily.

At Dr. Chen Piano Studio, we believe a trial lesson is a three-way opportunity.
It’s a chance for the student and parent to see if the teacher is the right fit — and for the teacher to evaluate the student’s readiness and learning needs.
Our teachers are all professional and highly qualified, but personality match matters. Sometimes, even with excellent teaching, the chemistry just isn’t right — and that’s okay. A trial lesson helps us make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident moving forward.
It’s also a great time for us to understand your goals and expectations for your child’s musical journey, and for you to ask any questions about our studio, curriculum, or teaching philosophy.
A trial lesson is more than just a sample class — it’s a chance to see how your child connects with the teacher, how the teacher works with students at their level, and what learning at our studio will actually feel like.
We start by listening. Before or after the lesson, we’ll ask you to fill out a short parent questionnaire so we can better understand your goals, your child’s personality, and how you view things like performance or exams. During the lesson, the teacher will also chat briefly with your child to get a feel for their background, interests, and how they respond to instruction.
We focus on how your child learns. Every student is different. Some jump right in, others take time to warm up. Our teachers are trained to observe and adapt — whether it’s posture, focus, or confidence — and make adjustments that meet your child where they are. For young beginners, this might include helping them sit at the right height or guiding them to curve their fingers correctly from the start.
We make the piano feel approachable — and exciting. Even in the first lesson, your child will get to play. We’ll explore the keyboard, learn some finger numbers, and even improvise music using black keys. By the end, many students can play a short, familiar tune — even if they’ve never touched a piano before. This sense of early success is key to building motivation.
We show what musical learning actually looks like. Trial lessons aren't performances. They’re quiet observations of how your child responds to instruction, how focused they are, what excites them, and what challenges them. This helps us make thoughtful recommendations on lesson length, pacing, and practice expectations — so you can make an informed decision about next steps.
For adults and experienced students: If you’re an adult beginner or a transfer student with prior experience, we’ll adapt the trial accordingly — possibly introducing reading, technique, or reviewing a prepared piece. The teacher will give direct feedback and discuss next steps clearly.
In short: We use the trial lesson to assess fit — both for the student and the teacher. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of what learning at our studio is like, and whether our teaching style and structure are the right match for your family.
Yes, you’re welcome to schedule additional trial lessons with other teachers to find the best fit for your child.
We offer one free 30-minute trial per student. Additional trial lessons are $38 per session. Trial lessons with Dr. Chen is $45 for 30 minutes.
